Fussy nights: Hvad er årsagen, og hvordan kan man tackle det?

Fussy nights: What causes them and how to deal with them?

Do you find that your baby is restless, fussy and inconsolable in the evening and at night? Maybe it feels like nothing can calm your baby, and that the crying often comes at the same time every night? Then it sounds like you are experiencing what is called “fussy nights”.

In this blog post, we will explain what fussy nights are, possible causes, and most importantly; how you can tackle it in a positive and constructive way.

What does fussy nights mean?

The concept  "Fussy nights" or "fussy period" refers to the period when your baby becomes restless, cries a lot and has difficulty settling down in the evening and night, often at the same time every night. It can seem like an unexplained cry that starts out of the blue and can last for hours at a time. This behavior is completely normal and typically occurs in infants aged 3-12 weeks. .

Possible reasons why your baby is restless in the evening and at night

The fact that your baby becomes restless and sad in the evening is not because you are doing anything wrong as a parent, and there is often a period in a small child's life that passes after a few weeks.
Below are some possible explanations for why many babies experience fussy nights.

Here are some of the most common reasons :

Overstimulation : Babies' nervous systems are still immature, making them more sensitive to sounds, lights, and other stimuli. By evening, all the impressions of the day can simply become too overwhelming.

Overtiredness : Although it may sound counterintuitive, overtired babies can have a hard time falling asleep. If for some reason your baby hasn't gotten enough rest during the day, it can result in nighttime restlessness.

Digestive problems: Stomach bloating and other digestive problems can lead to discomfort and crying in babies, especially in the evening.

How to calm and comfort your unhappy baby

Although fussy nights can be a challenging period, fortunately there are many things you can do to soothe and comfort your baby.

Here are some concrete suggestions :

Swaddle your baby : Swaddling babies can give them a safe and soothing feeling, just like when they were in the womb.

Use a baby carrier, sling or fitness ball : Closeness and movement can be calming for many babies during fussy nights. If your baby finds peace when cradled in your arms, then sitting on a fitness ball can be a great relief for mom and dad.

Sing or hum calm melodies : Your voice can have a very calming effect on your baby.

Massage your baby : Gentle baby massage can relieve discomfort and strengthen your bond.

When do fussy nights stop?

Fortunately, fussy nights are a phase that passes for most babies. Typically, you will find that the worst period is between 6-8 weeks, after which it gradually decreases. Most babies grow out of fussy nights completely by 3-4 months of age.

When should you contact your health visitor regarding fussy nights?

In most cases, fussy nights are just a natural part of baby development.

However, you should always contact your healthcare provider or doctor if :

Your baby has a fever

There is blood in the stool.

Your baby vomits repeatedly

The crying is extreme and persistent.

Your baby rejects all forms of comfort

Fussy nights can also be hard for parents - remember to take good care of yourself

While fussy nights are certainly a challenging time for your baby, they can also be very taxing on you as a parent. It's important to remember to take care of yourself during this time. Be kind to each other and ask for help from family and friends when you need it.
